Workers Are Hurting — and They Trust Unions
New AFL-CIO polling shows that working people are struggling with rising costs — but they also see unions as a trusted and powerful way to improve their lives.
The 2026 State of the Unions polling found that 94% of workers say things are too expensive, while four out of five say their paychecks aren’t keeping up with the cost of living, including the rising costs of groceries, rent, child care and gas.
“Workers trust unions more than either major political party.”
The poll found that 52% of workers trust unions, compared with 32% who trust the Democratic Party and 26% who trust the Republican Party. The only group workers trust more is their own neighbors, at 75%.
That trust is even stronger among young workers. Among people ages 18–30, 61% trust unions, compared with 28% who trust the Democratic Party and 22% who trust the Republican Party.
The findings also show that support for unions remains strong. For the fifth year in a row, seven in 10 Americans say they support unions — the highest sustained level of support in a generation. By a 2-to-1 margin, people say unions are more needed today than in the past.
And more workers are saying they want a union on the job. Among workers ages 18–30 who aren’t currently in a union, 57% say they would join one at their most recent workplace — a 10-point increase from last year.
The message is clear: working people know the economy isn’t working for them, and they’re increasingly looking to each other — and to unions — for solutions.
The polling was conducted by the AFL-CIO in coordination with David Binder Research.
