Use Your Weingarten Rights – Don’t Go Into a Disciplinary Meeting Alone
If management asks you to attend a meeting and you believe the discussion could lead to discipline, stop and call your union representative. Do not assume the meeting is “just a conversation,” and do not walk into a potential disciplinary meeting without understanding your rights.
As a union member, you have Weingarten Rights—the right to request union representation during a meeting or discussion with management that you reasonably believe could lead to discipline. That meeting could happen in an office, over the phone or elsewhere.
Your union representative is there to make sure you are not facing management alone. A representative can help you understand why the meeting is happening, hear what is being said, ask for clarification, object to unfair questioning, request a break to speak with you privately and provide guidance throughout the meeting.
Know the stakes before you answer questions. If you are unsure why you are being called into a meeting or whether discipline could result, contact your union representative before the meeting begins. If the meeting is already underway and you realize it may involve discipline, you can request union representation at that point.
Do not waive your rights because you feel pressured, embarrassed or caught off guard. You have a union for a reason. Use it.
If you request a union representative and management denies that request, MCGEO’s guidance states that you are entitled to end the meeting, and retaliation for requesting representation is prohibited.
Bottom line: Never go into a meeting where you may be disciplined without first understanding what is at stake and what you are entitled to as a union member.

Celebrating the Cultures That Make Up Our Union
On September 10, Ride-On hosted a celebration recognizing Enkutatash, the Ethiopian New Year—a holiday that marks the beginning of a new year on the Ethiopian calendar. In 2026, Enkutatash welcomes the year 2019.
Enkutatash is a time of renewal, hope and new beginnings, traditionally celebrated with family, friends, food, music and community. The celebration offered a wonderful opportunity to recognize and learn more about a tradition that is important to members of our community.
It also serves as a reminder of something worth celebrating throughout our union: MCGEO members come from many different backgrounds, cultures and traditions, but we are united in the workplace and in our union.
From the holidays we celebrate to the food we share, the languages we speak and the traditions we pass down, the diversity of our membership is one of our strengths. Every member brings their own experiences and culture to our union—and together, we are stronger because of it.
As we celebrate Enkutatash and the Ethiopian New Year, we also celebrate the many cultures represented among MCGEO members. Here’s to renewal, hope, new beginnings—and to the community we build together.
Happy Ethiopian New Year! Melkam Addis Amet!
