MCGEO members showed up and spoke out during Prince George’s County Council Chair Krystal Oriadha’s Countywide Summer Listening Tour last week, making sure County leaders heard directly from the library workers who keep Prince George’s County’s libraries running every day.

Several PGCMLS members attended each of the listening sessions and took the opportunity to tell their stories directly to Chair Oriadha and other attendees. They spoke about the reality of working two years without a raise while taking on heavier workloads because the library system has approximately 40 vacant positions. Members made clear that the library system’s budget crisis is putting added pressure on workers and making it harder to provide the services Prince George’s County residents rely on.
Members shared what they see every day and explained why adequate funding and staffing are essential to maintaining strong, accessible libraries. They also made clear that investing in PGCMLS means investing in the workers who provide these vital public services.

The listening tour provided an important opportunity for County officials to hear directly from working people about the issues affecting their workplaces and their communities.

A FIRST CONTRACT FOR CHARLES COUNTY LIBRARY WORKERS!
Charles County library workers have ratified their first union contract — overwhelmingly approving the agreement by a 90% vote!
After a lengthy bargaining process, library workers won their first-ever collective bargaining agreement, establishing improved wages, working conditions and workplace protections and giving workers a stronger voice on the job.
The negotiations took longer than necessary after Charles County hired the high-priced management-side law firm Jackson Lewis to represent the County in bargaining.
“Our members stood together, stayed engaged and made their voices heard. They should be incredibly proud of what they accomplished,” said Gino Renne, president of UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO.
