After productive negotiations, Local 1994 reached a tentative agreement yesterday with the Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) on the wage reopener, successfully avoiding the need for today’s scheduled arbitration. More details will be shared soon.

Today, on Workers’ Memorial Day, we pause to honor the workers who never made it home—and recommit ourselves to the fight for safer workplaces.

In 2024, 5,070 workers were killed on the job, and an estimated 135,000 died from occupational diseases. That’s more than 380 workers lost every single day due to hazardous working conditions.

These are not just numbers. They are our coworkers, our neighbors, our family members. And the truth is, many of these tragedies are preventable.

Fifty-five years after the Occupational Safety and Health Act promised every worker the right to a safe job, too many are still being put at risk. At the same time, enforcement resources continue to fall short—leaving millions of workers without the protections they deserve.

Strong unions make workplaces safer. Through collective bargaining, advocacy, and solidarity, we fight every day to ensure our members have the protections, training, and voice they need to stay safe on the job.

Today, we remember those we have lost. Tomorrow, we continue the fight—for stronger protections, real accountability, and the fundamental right of every worker to come home safe at the end of the day. Hold the Line!
