HHS Management Calls Police on Union Reps

Last week, your union went to the Department of Health and Human Services Director Raymond Crowel's offices to deliver a petition on behalf of HHS members. Crowel's response was to call the police on the union and his own employees claiming that we were trespassing even though the union has the legal right to be in our worksites and the employees work for the County.

Crowel's behavior mirrors that of past HHS Directors. Take a combative and resistant stance against making real change in the agency.

Your union will not let this behavior continue. The added value of union representation is the right and privilege of assuring your issues are not ignored by management.

We will continue to press for positive change in the climate at HHS and beyond. As always, we are committed to doing our best for you and your coworkers.

As Friction between Union, Department of Health Intensifies, Police Called To Intervene

Employees and managers at odds over years of ‘deep-seated issues’

[from Bethesda Beat]

Montgomery County police were asked to step in last week when union employees tried to deliver a workplace petition to the county’s Department of Health and Human Services administrative offices in Rockville.

It was the latest sign of conflict within a department long plagued by disagreements between the staff and management. President Gino Renne of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1994 — a union chapter representing HHS employees — called the agency “one of the worst-run departments in the entire county government.”
