Dear ,
Nearly 300 members packed the council hearing room yesterday as the County Council voted unanimously to reject funding our contract.
This vote was led by Councilmember Hans Reimer, who knowingly misrepresented the numbers in an effort to score cheap political points at the expense of our members. We don’t think it’s a coincidence that Mr. Riemer’s email regarding the rejection arrived in public and employee in-boxes just minutes after the vote was cast. He is term-limited and will have to find a new job in 2022. Speculation is he plans to run for County Executive.
What’s next?
We go back to the bargaining table with the County Executive and representatives of the County Council on Sunday night. Our goal is to reach a compromise that will secure funding for a wage package that resembles our contract as much as possible. We will share the details with you as soon as they are available.
We will have to fight, make no mistake, to get what we deserve, but that’s always been the case. We’ve never backed down from a fight, and we won’t forget this betrayal.
We know you won’t either.
We need you to stay active!
It’s May Day — the day of the worker — and a perfect time to rev up your fighting spirit. You deserved the best and we will do all we can to get you there! But don’t ignore your role, your union needs you.
In the coming days and weeks, we will need you to join us in fighting for our contract. We will call on you to contact your councilmembers, to tell your friends, family and neighbors to do the same. We will need you to show up to meetings and rally behind your union. We said we won’t forget, and we need to show them we mean it.
Stay tuned…
