Gaithersburg, MD – Local 1994 Members and staff gathered after the union’s semi-annual stewards’ conference on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, to announce several endorsements of candidates for the Montgomery County Council.
Members endorsed County Councilmember Marc Elrich in his bid for Montgomery County Executive. The union also endorsed Montgomery County Council At-large Candidates Brandy Brooks, Chris Wilhelm, Will Jawando and District 1 Candidate Ana Sol-Gutiérrez.
Elrich presented his “First 90 Days Financial To-Do List,” which is a white paper that outlines Elrich’s long-term financial plan, including how he would begin a structural review of county departments in partnership with MCGEO and other county unions.
Endorsements were decided by the rank-and-file endorsement committee and then voted on by the executive board and shop stewards.
"The endorsement committee chose candidates who impressed them with their committment to working families and working family issues," said Amy Millar, special assistant to the president at Local 1994. "They saw a passion to protect Montgomery County and to protect public services in the candidates they interviewed. And in some cases, they had to make tough choices between some very good candidates - a good choice to have to make. We can be proud of the folks we're supporting."
“Our endorsement committee has chosen candidates who we believe will best represent the members of Local 1994,” said Gino Renne, president of UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO. “We will put all the resources we can muster behind our endorsed candidates and the only thing we ask in return is, Don't forget us, support us, and, together, we will make Montgomery County stronger than it is today.”
